Did you know that 86% of superheroes were white males or white in general? The number was greater in the past. As characters of other races and genders gain more spotlight in the 21st century, a small loss of privilege, which does not look or feel like privilege to those who enjoy it, suddenly feels like oppression. Most people can’t define “woke,” but get angry when they hear it. That is because tens of thousands of other comic book characters and female superheroes are now being given a long-overdue spotlight.

Modern Female Superheroes

No one is saying to read a comic book because it features female superheroes. You should just expand your interests. If you only read certain comics because they only feature traditional white males in the lead, then how is that not closed-mindedness?

Here is a list of 8 of the best female superhero comics that you should check out now in 2025.

Psylocke has one of the most convoluted backstories of any female superhero. The character first appeared in X-Men #256 in 1989 as a generic female assassin. The white character Betsy Braddock took over the mind of Psylocke (Kwannon), and her Asian body and appearance, for almost 30 years.

Braddock’s consciousness went back to her original body because of this confusion. Kwannon now has control of her body. Kwannon is now technically the second character to use the name Psylocke, even though she was Psylocke all along.

In this series, Kwannon battles radical humans who are harvesting the bodies of young mutants to gain temporary superpowers.

Female Superheroes

Comic books should not be diverse for their own sake –  they should also feature compelling stories that grab the reader’s attention. A great way to grab a reader’s attention is to see something different in a comic or see a character that represents themselves. It’s easy to say that comic books should never change because you prefer 86% of all comic book characters looking the same.

You don’t have to read a comic book because it has a black, non-white, or female lead. But you’re missing out on new experiences to maintain a status quo for its own sake.
