It is taken for granted by most readers that all comic books are superhero-based. However, monster-based comics are also very popular with readers. Human beings are genetically programmed to believe in and be scared of monsters, even when we know they don’t exist. And the specters of monsters inspire our stories, films, TV shows, and comic books even today.

Here are eight of the best monster-based comics of the year.

1. Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong

What more would you want in your monster-based comics? As Clark Kent and Lois Lane are enjoying a date, Godzilla emerges from Metropolis Bay. King Kong and other monsters show up. The Justice League battles these monsters but Godzilla defeats Superman in an embarrassing fashion. Lex Luthor creates a metallic Godzilla, Mecha-Godzilla, as a countermeasure.

4. Dawnrunner

While this comic was clearly inspired by the monsters and robots film Pacific Rim, it is also one of the best monster-based comics of the year. One of the new Iron Kings, Dawnrunner, may be humanity’s last hope.

7. Something is Killing the Children Vol. 8
